It’s Diwali. Wide-eyed little faces light up at the sight of twirling sparklers and pyrotechnic fountains shooting up metallic shades of glittering stars that brighten as they rise, and then fade into the night sky. This is the stuff Diwali dreams are made of.
Elsewhere across the globe, as the day dawns, second- and fourth-graders Christina and Renee head to the crude factory behind their house where they make firecrackers for sale. Renee complains of a backache from packaging the previous day’s batch of crackers. Yet as Christmas and the holiday season approach, she and others like her will skip school days to spend more time performing the debilitating, and dangerous work that support their impoverished Guatemalan families. On a bright and sunny September 16th, over 500 volunteers and runners came together for Vibha’s first major event in the New York City/New Jersey area- Vibha’s “Dream Mile” which was held in Skillman Park, New Jersey.
